Lares Trail to Machu Picchu is the alternative trekking route from Cusco, it’s an authentic experience explore Andean culture and less the crowded than the traditional Inca Trail. This 4-day adventure perfectly combines pristine wilderness with the warmth of its people. You will hike through high-altitude landscapes, lagoons and agricultural valleys, interacting with Quechua speaking communities that keep their ancestral traditions alive, llamas and alpacas and their textiles culture.


You will also have the unique opportunity to relax in the famous Lares hot springs before heading your journey to the Machu Picchu.


We travel in small groups (7 to 15 people), accompanied by highly trained staff, ensuring a suitable pace and a safe memorable experience.


GENERAL INFORMATION


Location: Lares District, Calca Province in Cusco. The route crosses high Andean zones and traditional communities.


Tour Type: Adventure trekking with a cultural experience and beautiful views.


Difficulty Level: Moderate. It is not a technical hike, but stamina is required for walking at altitude.


Highest Altitude: Approx. 4780 meters (15,682 feet )  above sea level.


Season: Available year-round (January to December). The best time is the dry season (April to October).


Unique Feature: This is one of the routes where you will have the most authentic contact with local families and Andean textiles.


Schedule:5.00 am in the morning hotel pick-up and approximately 8.30 at night arrival to Cusco.

Here are tips to fully enjoy the 4-Day Lares to Machu Picchu Trek:


Important: It is vital to spend at least 1 or 2 days in Cusco before the start of the tour to properly acclimatise to the altitude.


Thermal Clothing: Important! The Lares Trail is one of the coldest routes in Cusco. It's essential to bring thermal clothing, a fleece and a warm jacket for the nights and mornings.


Hiking Footwear: Wear hiking shoes or boots with non-slip, waterproof, suitable for walking with stability on uneven terrain.


Sun Protection: The sun's radiation is strong at high altitude. Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to avoid sunburn and dehydration.


Swimwear: Don't forget your swimsuit and towel to enjoy the Lares hot springs.


Documentation: It is essential to carry the Cusco Tourist Ticket (Partial or Full) for entry to the archaeological sites, as well as a passport or national identity document for Peruvian tourists. Both must be original and valid.


IMPORTANT:


Altitude and Climate: The tour takes place at an altitude of over 4780 meters (15,700 feet) above sea level, so some people may experience altitude sickness. Temperatures drop considerably, especially in the morning and during the dry season (frost).


Tour Rules: Out of respect for the local communities and the environment, it is mandatory to follow the guide's instructions and always stay on the established trails.

  • The Lares Trail to Machu Picchu offers an authentic and different experience, combining nature, living culture and adventure on one of the least traveled routes in Cusco.
One of the biggest attractions of the tour is the visit to the Lares hot springs, whose volcanic waters allow you to relax your body before starting the hike, providing well-being and a special connection with Andean nature.
During the trek, you will travel through high mountain landscapes, glacial lakes, agricultural valleys and Andean passes above 4600 meters (15,100 feet) above sea level, offering unique panoramic views of the mountain range and sacred mountains such as Pitusiray.
Direct contact with traditional Andean communities, such as Kiswarani and Cancha Cancha, allows one to learn about their ancestral lifestyle, traditions, handcrafted textiles and the use of the Quechua language, making the tour a profound cultural experience.
  • Transport: Pick-up from your hotel, Airbnb or other accommodation in Cusco, along with round-trip tourist transport for the entire excursion, ensuring punctuality and comfort.
  • Meals during the tour: Breakfast provided before the hike begins (including hot teas), as well as lunch and dinner during the first two days. On the third day, only breakfast and lunch are provided; dinner is not included.
  • Service: Accompaniment by a professional bilingual guide (Spanish/English) experienced in trekking and high-altitude environments, providing constant guidance and information.
  • Assistance and safety: Availability of a first-aid kit and emergency oxygen throughout the tour, should the need arise.
  • Porters will carry all necessary gear, such as tents and logistical equipment and the team includes specialised high-altitude cooks responsible for all meals and logistics during the hike.
  • Entrance ticket to the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary and tourist bus ticket.
  • Attraction entrance fee: The entrance ticket to the Lares hot springs is not included and is paid directly on site, in accordance with current local regulations.

Día 1: Cusco – Baños Termales de Lares – Campamento Kiswarani

El tour inicia con el recojo temprano desde su hotel en Cusco, Urubamba, Huaran o Pisac, alrededor de las 5:00 a.m. Viajaremos durante aproximadamente tres horas a través del Valle Sagrado y la cordillera de los Andes hasta llegar a Lares, donde disfrutará de un desayuno con vistas panorámicas.

Antes de comenzar la caminata, tendrá tiempo para relajarse en los baños termales de Lares, cuyas aguas volcánicas poseen propiedades medicinales beneficiosas para músculos y articulaciones. Luego, continuaremos en transporte hasta el punto de inicio del trekking, ubicado a 3,300 m s. n. m.

Aquí conocerá a los arrieros y llameros que apoyan la expedición. La caminata comienza con un ascenso gradual de aproximadamente dos horas hasta el pueblo de Kiswarani, zona agrícola conocida como el “valle de la papa”. Tras el almuerzo preparado por el chef de trekking, participará en una ceremonia cultural con llamas, animales sagrados para la cosmovisión inca.

Por la tarde, visitará el pueblo y, si el tiempo lo permite, la escuela local donde aún se habla quechua. Finalmente, continuará hacia el campamento, donde disfrutará de bebidas calientes y una cena bajo un cielo estrellado.

Día 2: Kiswarani – Paso del Cóndor – Cancha Cancha

Este día inicia temprano con bebidas calientes y desayuno. La caminata asciende durante 3 a 4 horas hasta el Paso del Cóndor (Pachacútec), el punto más alto del trekking, ubicado a 4,680 m s. n. m. Desde aquí se obtienen vistas espectaculares de lagos, montañas y la imponente montaña Pitusiray.

Tras un descanso y fotografías, comenzaremos el descenso hacia el mirador donde se servirá el almuerzo. Posteriormente, continuaremos caminando hasta el pueblo de Cancha Cancha, una comunidad tradicional que conserva su estilo de vida ancestral, sin electricidad ni carreteras.

Aquí conocerá a las familias locales, sus técnicas de tejido artesanal y tradiciones incas. La jornada finaliza con bebidas calientes y cena en el campamento.

Día 3: Cancha Cancha – Huaran – Maras – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

Luego del desayuno, descenderá durante aproximadamente cuatro horas hacia Huaran, atravesando campos agrícolas tradicionales y experimentando el cambio de microclima hacia el Valle Sagrado.

Desde Huaran, el transporte lo llevará a visitar las Salineras de Maras, un impresionante complejo de más de 3,000 pozas de sal utilizadas desde la época preincaica. Posteriormente, continuaremos hacia Ollantaytambo, el único pueblo inca viviente, donde disfrutará de una visita guiada y cena en un restaurante local.

Por la noche, tomará el tren hacia Aguas Calientes, donde pasará la noche.

Día 4: Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco

El último día comienza temprano para tomar uno de los primeros buses hacia Machu Picchu, donde presenciará el amanecer sobre la ciudadela inca. Acompañado por su guía profesional, realizará una visita guiada de aproximadamente dos horas, explorando los sectores más importantes del santuario.

Luego dispondrá de tiempo libre para explorar por cuenta propia o ascender a Huayna Picchu (entrada opcional). Por la tarde, retornará en tren a Ollantaytambo y luego en transporte turístico a Cusco, con traslado final a su hotel.
